Default How to prepare for a long ride

How to do you prepare for a long ride? What do you do to make sure you are comfortable and how often do you pull over for a break?

We plan plenty of stops on long rides. You can only take as much as your saddle bags can hold. We stop whenever we need to. We usually travel in groups when we go on long rides, so there is frequent stopping. I make sure I have plenty of cold water (in a small cooler).

I'm thinking about a cross-country trip next summer and was wondering the same thing. I definitely want to ride with a group and will plan plenty of stops. I love riding, but it isn't like a long drive in a car...you can't just set the cruise button and sit back and relax.

Long car rides I can handle because of cruise control, A/C, music, etc. But I'm not sure I could do a long bike ride because of the things I'd miss in a car. Also, I think my butt would be so sore after a long ride.

It does take practice and even coming from my uncle who has rode for many years, its all about the practice he says. He still on nice days when he can, will bike into work which is about 90 minutes from his house but you just need to get used to it little by little. Planning stops is a must too!

When ever we go on "long rides" we just stop as we need to. We went on a 300 mile ride this weekend in 45 degree weather we stopped all the time. Whoever needed/wanted to stop just honked the horn and we would pull over at the next convienent area. Seems to work very well.
