Default Silverado 650 With a "Tight Clutch"

Just picked up a 2006 VStar Silverado 650.. and love it. However, when I got it, the clutch was a bit tight. If I try to start it when in first gear (with the clutch squeezed), it can't start and lurches forward. The only way I can get it to start is to put it in neutral and then start it.. and then shift into 1st (still lurches hard and wants to move forward) and then take off immediately. I tried relaxing the clutch a bit.. but too much and then it will never engage. The previous own said that this is "normal" and that I shouldn't start it in first.. but this is the first time that I've ever heard that. In my MSF class, we always parked it and started it in gear.

Any help on this simple tight clutch problem?

I'm picking up a copy of
"Clymer Yamaha V-Star 650, 1998-2007 (Clymer Motorcycle Repair) (Clymer Motorcycle Repai" "Clymer Yamaha V-Star 650, 1998-2007 (Clymer Motorcycle Repair) (Clymer Motorcycle Repai"
from amazon next week... maybe that will help.

My first instinct is to tell you the clutch needs to be replaced, but if the previous owner said this is "normal" then it's probably been doing this all along. You're not getting the full effect of the clutch, which is strange if it did that even when it was new. Have you taken it to someone to be checked out?

I hope the problem is only during starts and does not come during the ride, especially the part that says "then it will never engage". To be safe and sure, have it checked by a very good mechanic.

Regardless of what the owner told you I'd have a mechanic look at it to be on the safe side. You can never been to cautious when it comes to buying anything used. Good luck.

My thoughts exactly. I know when I buy anything used I always take it to the mechanic for an overhaul inspection just to make sure all is good. You never know what could have issues when you buy used. The clutch is certainly something you don't want to chance.
